Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority

Invitation for Bid Procurement Profiling the Institutional Memory of  Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation

Procurement Reference Number: 002/EMEPA-EWCA/2022

Background

Ethiopia is not new for the management and utilization of its natural resources. It has been using its resources in its traditional medicines, foods, folklores, etc. even up until today. This goes back to its old civilization which is compared to the Roman Empire by then. This old civilization was heavenly dependent on its wildlife resources including the famous trading of elephant tusks and myrrh. In the olden days, Ethiopia was known for supplying the world with these products. The supply of musk from civet cats also puts Ethiopia at the forefront in supplying the global market until recently.

The Ethiopian government formally started the conservation of its wildlife resources in the 1960s. A mandated wildlife conservation Institution was set up in 1964 under the name Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Organization (EWCO) under the then Ministry of Agriculture (MoA). Since then the institution has undergone several structural arrangements according to the frequent Government changes and interests. However, the wildlife conservation activities and the style of conservation approaches during each government setup were changing accordingly and it has become fundamental to document what has been exercised in the past 50 years on wildlife conservation and protected area management.

Objective

The overall objective of this work is to compile, document, and provide a comprehensive historical account of the pertinent information on the wildlife management of Ethiopia with special attention to protected area management and wildlife conservation in the past and possibly the current with potential management recommendations in the future.

Furthermore to investigate and document who and how was the wildlife sector managed in different Government eras and indicate how the past information will help the sector as input and contribute as a roadmap for the future. This will probably help to create adaptive and timely intervention wildlife conservation strategies in the immediate future. This in turn will also help to enhance the economic benefit of the sub-sector mainly ecotourism.
